Fanu is a Finnish breakbeat producer and DJ known for his unique style of music that blends elements of jungle, drum and bass, and hip-hop. Born as Janne Hatula in Tampere, Finland in 1981, Fanu began his music career in the late 90s, producing his first tracks under the name Fat Jonny.
In 2002, he released his first EP under the name Fanu, titled “Siren Song,” which gained him recognition in the breakbeat scene. He went on to release several other EPs and singles, including “Daylightless” and “Paracosm,” which solidified his reputation as one of the most innovative and experimental producers in the genre.
Fanu’s music is characterised by complex rhythms, intricate drum patterns, and atmospheric soundscapes. He often incorporates live instrumentation and field recordings into his tracks, creating a unique and organic sound that sets him apart from other producers.
In addition to his work as a producer, Fanu is also a talented DJ, known for his energetic and eclectic sets that showcase his love for a wide range of genres, including jungle, hip-hop, and dubstep.
Throughout his career, Fanu has remained true to his independent spirit, self-releasing much of his music through his own label, Lightless Recordings. He has also collaborated with other artists in the breakbeat scene, including Bill Laswell and Paradox.
Today, Fanu continues to be a respected and influential figure in the breakbeat scene, pushing the boundaries of the genre and inspiring a new generation of producers and DJs.
